Glass

We only take clean glass from food and drink containers. Other types of glass like window glass, light bulbs, drinking glasses and cookware are of different chemical composition and are not taken.

Preparation
Unbroken Glass

Please remove lids and discard in your rubbish bin, and rinse out your glass containers before placing into your crate.

Broken Glass

Any broken glass is a safety hazard for our workers and should be placed in an open container beside your rubbish bag, not in your recycling crate.

**Remember

Please empty and rinse out your bottles and jars and leave lids off. We can't take window glass, mirrors, lightbulbs, cookery, ovenware, crystal, drinking glasses, kitchenware and ornamental glass. Place broken glass into an open container next to your recycling crate or rubish bag.

What Happens to my Glass?
Glass

Because of issues including cost, cleanliness requirements, and strength and durability of containers, commercial reuse is not a feasible option at present.

Instead, glass is recycled into new containers or products. Some glass is sent to OI in Auckland for recycling back into glass bottles and jars. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of glass imported into New Zealand, they cannot recycle all the glass available.

Locally, certain wine and spirit bottles are reused and some glass is crushed and used for sandblasting, pool filtration, art supplies, decorative landscaping and floor tiles. Currently research is taking place into other alternative uses for crushed glass e.g. in roading, in sports turf, and as a ripening agent for vineyards.
