Preparation
Paper

All items must be clean, dry, empty, flattened and easy to collect They should be placed into a clean plastic supermarket bag, with the handles tied together. Place the bag on top of your crate. This ensures that the paper doesn't get wet, doesn't get loose and become litter in your street, and prevents your other recyclables from blowing away. Please don't overfill the bag as it may split and the contents fall out into the street. It is better to divide your paper between two bags.

Thin, Flat Card

Thin, flat card must be flattened and put into a plastic supermarket bag with your paper.

Telephone Directories

For about six weeks after your new directories are delivered you can put your old directories out for collection. Like other paper, put them in a plastic supermarket bag, tie the handles and place them on top of your crate.

**Remember

We can't take wet, dirty or food-soiled paper.

What happens to my paper?
Paper

Paper is sorted into old newspaper (ONP), card and mixed paper and these different types of paper are baled separately for various overseas markets. A bale of paper weighs approximately 800kg.

New Zealand ONP is easy to sell overseas because it is virgin product with no recycled content, but the bale must not contain cardboard or other contaminants. Newspaper can be recycled about eight times back into newspaper, then into thin, flat card - cereal, soap powder boxes etc. Some ONP is used by Canterbury Insulation to make insulation product which is sprayed into walls.

Telephone Directories & Mixed Paper

Mixed paper and thin, flat card are recycled into cardboard.
